Join us for a lecture presented by Ivan Man Dy on Manila's little known history of Art Deco architecture and design.

Manila became a territory under the United States’ sphere of influence from 1901-1945. Filipino architects – educated in American universities – introduced Art Deco to the Philippine capital city where it flourished and thrived. This lecture discusses the history and heritage of Art Deco in the Asia-Pacific region and takes you on a visual tour of Manila’s Art Deco legacy. From theaters to schools, sport facilities to funerary mausoleums, Art Deco was a style that Manileños truly embraced. Manila’s modern urban sprawl is home to remnants of a rich but largely unknown collection of Art Deco architecture.

Researcher, writer, public historian, and specialist guide, Ivan Man Dy is a trustee of the Manila-based Heritage Conservation Society. He is the author of the recently published book ‘Deco Filipino’, an extensive documentation of Art Deco heritage around the Philippines. He organized the first Manila Art Deco weekend in 2017 to raise the profile and awareness of the local Art Deco style. Since 2005, he has led thousands of participants on cultural walks around Manila’s historic neighborhoods.
